It seems like only yesterday, but it was over 50 years ago when I met Bertha. Our newlywed husbands were both fighting in the Korean War, and we were here together praying for them at a special worship service at the First Baptist church.
I can't say that we had much more than that in common. We got very close over the years. When we had our families, on Sundays after services we would barbeque in the summer. Our sons played football together all through high school. 28 years ago my daughter Tina married Bertha's son John. As you can see, there is much history between the two of us, much more than could be put down in this story.
Bertha is a glorious Christian. She started a program where we knit shawls and blankets and give them to the homeless. She than went on ... to a program to knit all the newborns with AIDS little outfits. Bertha and I go to the AIDS unit at the hospital and hold the babies and rock them from time to time, however, I found out recently that Bertha goes every single night before she goes to bed. I asked her about that, why she at her age, why would she go and do something like that. She simply put it to me, "It's what Jesus would do, use what his Father gave him to use."
I don't know how or where she gets her ideas, but I have never seen that woman do a single thing that didn't benefit the good of others. She is a living saint, and a magnificent steward at that.
