Taking the First Step

Submitted by: BettyCharlotte NC

Bonnie Hanson was a shy, reserved 40-year-old housewife when she decided to return to college and seek a degree in social work. She tithed to her parish out of her income as a secretary and believed she was serving God the best she could. But, God had more plans for her than to sit back and relax, now that the kids were raised. She had been given talents that God wanted to be invested in God's kingdom.

These were not natural talents. She was shy. She didn't realize she had been given the talent of teaching men who had been arrested for domestic violence and required to attend a course on anger management. Bonnie was not aware that in her heart was the gift of spiritual knowledge, which would enable her to cut through the men's defenses and get them to trust her.

Many times, as in the case of Bonnie, abilities are not recognized until the servant is willing to risk their security and use what they've been given. She was willing to invest her abilities to help community in a meaningful way. She is a wonderful example for all those who have not yet used their God-given talents!
