Frank Jones' Secret

Submitted by: CharlesMesa AZ

Ninety year old Frank Jones had a secret. I was his pastor for many years before I discovered what it was. I learned it by observing his lifestyle and the amazing ministry the old fellow exhibited. Ministry? A crippled old former railroad worker had a ministry? Yes. Big time.

Widows and widowers came weekly to be in the presence of cheerful old Frank Jones as he called himself. Little children knocked almost daily on his door. They got a very warm greeting, words of praise and encouragement. Sometimes they got a sucker. They giggled and left with huge smiles and obviously joyful spirits. The mail man opened Franks door, announced his arrival, sat and sipped tea with Frank. He left refreshed and blessed. The college boy whose parents lived next door to Frank felt drawn to visit the old fellow when he was home during a break. Frank, the young man said to me, is a true saint.

I visited Frank often because I too felt an inner joy in the presence of a man who exuded love and holiness. As time went on, I began to fathom the secret of this dear joyful soul who lived alone, but who was never alone. When visitors were not there, one knew for certain that God was present as Franks eternal companion.

Sometimes Frank told me about his late evening meetings with God when he sat in a chair next to a table on which his Bible was placed and prayed lovingly to our Creator. When his old body ached late at night, he would simply get up, sit in his chair, and have a wonderful visit with God.

Here is how I discovered his wonderful secret. As I would prepare to leave, he generally would hand me an envelope and tell me it was his offering to the church. Occasionally, I would say to him, Frank, our parish is doing very well financially right now.  Why dont you keep your gift and buy something you might need?

He always answered, It is wonderful that the parishs needs are being met.  But I want to give because I need to give.  I came to understand that good stewards are good stewards because they give for the health of their souls. Give, said our Lord, and it will be given to you! (Lk 6:38)
